BomberBlitz.com Exclusive Interview - Scott Lucas
BomberBlitz – Tell us about the path from Camperdown to Windy Hill! Was footy always on the agenda?
Scott Lucas – I was drafted from the Geelong Falcons U18’s in 1994 after playing my junior football with Camperdown. It was always a dream to play AFL
BB – Which players did you idolise while growing up?
SL – Gary Ablett, Ken Hinkley
BB – If you hadn’t ended up at Essendon, which club would have been your next choice?
SL – Geelong, as I barracked for the and it was a little closer to where I grew up
BB – What can you remember about your first game?
SL – Anzac Day 96. We lost and it was a huge crowd!
BB – Are you superstitious that something bad will happen to your family if you kick with your right foot?!
SL – No, it’s just that I am not a great kick on my right!
BB – Who has the better right foot, you or Lloydy? Are yours & Lloydy’s right foot better than Hirdy’s left?
SL – Lloydy’s right is better, but we both have Hirdy’s left covered!
BB – Was your kick to Moorcroft for that mark in ’01 a deliberate pass or a chance to show everyone you can kick on your right foot?
SL – It was a kick and hope!
BB – Do you get sick of everyone going on & on about you always using your left foot?!
SL – It gets a little boring, but doesn’t overly bother me.
BB – what type of boots do you wear and why? Do you have any pre-game rituals or routines or superstitions?
SL – Adidas. They have provided me with boots for a long time and are a great boot, so I’ll continue to wear them. Superstitions – the same towel each week!
BB – How can you kick so far? Was it something that just happened for you naturally or have you had to work hard on it? Who kicks further, you or Fletch? Do you ever have competitions?!
SL – Genetics! I have long limbs which is the key, and a big follow through. Fletch kicks further… just!
BB – Have you ever been in a situation where you have thought “fark, I’m too far out here, better pass it off”?!
SL – Once or twice but not often!
BB – When you line up from inside 50m, do you ever about backing up about 30 metres and coming in on the run instead?!
SL – No… although for a while I couldn’t kick a set shot, but with extra practice my set shots are ok now!
BB – Is the goal you kicked against the Bulldogs on the run from about 70 back on a friday night in 2001 the longest goal you have ever kicked?
SL – Yes.
BB – Were you surprised when Silvagni kicked the ball to you with seconds to go to allow you to kick the sealer in 98?
SL – Very, it was also very lucky
BB – Did you really play on after taking that mark in round 2 against Carlton this year?!
SL – Possibly!
BB – Which was a bigger high, the game winning goal against Carlton in 1998, or the sealer from 60 out against the Hawks in the prelim in 2001?
SL – The prelim in 2001
BB – Which game do you rate as the best you’ve played? Which other games are up there?
SL – The 2000 Grand Final although personally not great is my favourite game. Anzac Day 2000.
BB – Your comeback game after your broken leg against the Bulldogs I think was one of your best ever. You kicked six goals! How did you get over the psychological barrier to play so well after such a painful injury?
SL – Try to forget about it and focus on the job at hand.
BB – What would you consider your biggest football disappointment?
SL – 2001 Grand Final
BB – Who’s been your toughest opponent, forward and back?
SL – As a forward G Archer, and as a backman Brown and Tredrea
BB – Position wise, we’ve seen you all over the ground! You can play both flanker and KPP very well; which one are you more suited to or which one do you like?
SL – both!
BB – Would you be comfortable playing Full Forward if they moved Matthew Lloyd to CHF? Have you ever wanted to play FF more often?
SL – I would feel reasonably comfortable, but have no desire to play there more often.
BB – Just how close were you to heading back down the highway to Geelong a few years back? What do you make of your name occasionally turning up in trade talk?
SL – Never close, but that’s a part of football, as with my family near to Geelong the people like to speculate.
BB – Despite many fans thinking you are ideal captaincy material, that doesn’t seem to be something you’re actively seeking, why is that?
SL – I don’t think you seek something like that, it’s something you grow toward, and Lloydy is an ideal candidate.
BB – Sometimes you appear a little distant when you’re talking to fans; do you like the limelight or would you rather not have to deal with that side of the game?
SL – I like to avoid the attention and limelight as often as I can.
BB – What have been the biggest changes to the game while you’ve been playing? Do you believe the changes have been for the better?
SL – The time commitment to training and match preparations has gone up considerably; the changes have seen the game become more professional.
BB – Which other players at the club do you hang around with? Who is the most annoying? Who is the funniest?
SL – Everyone at different times; Kepler would be the most annoying; Teddy is the funniest!
BB – Matthew Lloyd put down your name as his choice of lifeline for “Who Wants To Be Millionaire”. Would he be in trouble?!
What’s your general knowledge like? And why did you choose Cupes?!
SL – My general knowledge is OK but far from good enough! And Cupes gives a different perspective.
BB – You and Georgia have 2 beautiful girls- any plans for a boy to join the Hird, Misiti, Barnard and Fletcher Jnrs in 2025?
SL – That would be perfect!
BB – How many more years would you like to play, injuries permitting?
SL – 4 or 5 ideally
BB – How are you preparing for ‘life after footy’? Do you have any aspirations for a career as a coach or administrator after you finish playing? Do you think you and your family will be living back in Camperdown?
SL – A little study. I do have an interest in both the coaching and admin sides of the game. I realise how hard farmers work so I may not move back to Camperdown!
BB – Do you read the online forums and if so what do you make of them?
SL – No, not really.
BB – What’s up with the movie reviews? Is there a career after footy there?
SL – Watching movies for a job would be great!
BB – Are you aware, that the chorus in Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” sounds like “Scotty Lucas you crazy right now”?
SL – No, but I am aware of Beyonce’s outfit in the filmclip!

SL – You obviously don’t understand fashion!
