Training Report - 1/5/09

By Bomb Doe
Under a grey and chilly sky Essendon was led out by Dustin Fletcher, 10 minutes ahead of the scheduled time, on to Windy Hill.

The session lasted about 30 minutes and it was sharp. Lots of chatter amongst the boys. Spirits seemed high – as is to be expected. There was no modified group. All the on field players participated in all of the drills. I think everyone who was available trained. But I didn’t do a head count. Only McVeigh made a brief appearance on the ground, wrapped in a towel and with googles in hand, on his way to the pool.

The drill work focused mainly on handballing and kicking. Not a lot of running given the team play tomorrow night and have to presumably fly to Brisbane. It was initially close in handballing and short in kicking and marking. Then drills to move the ball through the centre corridor. In the end they finished with goal kicking. Both in close and from a distance. The also included snap shots from the pocket under pressure.

A number of the boys finished the session with a “game” of seeing who could kick a goal from around the wheely bin 30 metres out in the pocket. Lovett and McPhee started it and then Ryder, Dempsey, Myers, Pears, Hocking joined in. The only two to succeed were Hocking and Pears and one of the assistant coaches( who did it first).
